Day visitors
can have a pony ride or hike up to
Thajwas
Glacier which at a distance of 4 Km from
Sonamarg.
Adventure lovers there are there are number
of long treks available and
some of them are, to high altitude lakes, Vishansar,
Kishansar, Gadsar, and Gangabal. Sindh valley
to Lidder valley (Sonamarg to Pahalgam) is an
excellent long trek.
Sonamarg is another base for Amarnath
Yatra; This trek can be undertaken
in one long day from Baltal. One can even fly
to and fro Amarnath from Baltal.
Trout fishing, Trout fish
(Rainbow and brown) are abundant in the river
Sindh; there are several excellent beats along
the road to Sonamarg.
Fishing is governed by law, a permit is required,
which can be obtained from the fisheries department
in Srinagar against a fee, on first come first
served basis, maximum for three days validity.
The fishing tackles can be hired locally. The
season extends from April to September.
Accommodation, there are only
few hotels, basic Guest houses, Huts and Camping
sites who provide fairly comfortable accommodation.
At Baltal, there are many camps ( Upper class
and Basic), who provide accommodation to pilgrims.
